Fall Prevention Equipment – A Necessity for Bucket Trucks and Roofing Jobs

[ad_1]

In an effort to reduce fatalities in the residential construction workplace, in 2010, the OSHA made significant changes to their fall protection guidelines. For residential roofing jobs that call for a worker to be higher than 6 feet in the air, they are required to be protected by the use of guard-rail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems. If an employer can prove that these systems create a greater hazard for the worker, then the employer will be required to implement a fall protection plan. All fall protection plans must be prepared and approved by a qualified person and also re-approved by a qualified person if anything in the protection plan changes.

When working in aerial lift or boom-type platforms, including scissor lifts and bucket trucks, the worker must either have a guardrail system in place (where applicable) or be tied off. The acceptable methods for tie-offs are explained below.

Restraint Systems – Restraint systems include a body belt or harness. There must be a fall protection plan in place that prevents a worker from falling any distance.

Positioning Devices – Typically used in construction work, a positioning device is defined as a body belt or harness system that is rigged to allow an employee to be supported on a vertical surface, such as up a pole, and work while leaning and having both hands free. Positioning devices are allowed to have a maximum fall of up to 2 feet. These devices are not allowed for use in scissor lifts or bucket trucks as they are working on a horizontal platform.

Fall Arrest Systems – Also used in construction work, this is a device that allows an arrested fall when the aerial lift or scaffold is able to withstand vertical and lateral loads caused by an arrested fall. With this system, you must use a body harness instead of a body belt.

Recently, the OSHA has started cracking down on enforcing these guidelines. They claim there are weekly deaths related to falls that could have been prevented by utilizing the proper safety procedures and equipment. Safety should be the first concern for workers in these industries. Penalties accrued by not following using safety methods can be very expensive. Back in 2010, the OSHA proposed a $70,000 penalty against Johnson Controls for allowing their workers on roofs without fall protection. The worst penalty of all, though, is serious injury or death caused by something so easily prevented as putting on your harness

Lumpers and Humpers – Who Are They and What Do They Do?

[ad_1]

The dictionary defines a lumper as a laborer who handles freight or cargo. In the trucking industry that is exactly what a lumper does. He or she unloads trailers for others. They are independent of the warehouse where the driver is making their delivery. The term humper is used more often when talking about household goods. It seems fitting doesn’t it? A person humps the boxes or furniture on their backs.

How much do Lumpers/Humpers cost?

How do you find one?

Why you should hire a lumper

Lumpers being independent in most cases can charge what they want. They are usually reasonable. Probably a normal range is anywhere from $60.00 to $150.00. The product and where you deliver will make the final difference in how much it will cost you.

Let’s use a pallet full of frozen cheese sticks and the pallet is stacked 8 high and 12 wide. The warehouse that you are delivering will only allow 6 high and 12 wide and you will have to break the pallet down to fit their requirements. Multiply that by 22 or 24 pallets and it turns into a lot of work.

The next load might be toilet paper loaded on the floor all the way to the roof and it has to go onto pallets of 4X6. Believe me that it makes it a tough job. It has to be done and this is a real live example of some of the work that is being done at warehouses every day. The Lumpers are there for drivers for several reasons.

Lumping provides a living for their families.

Drivers are needed to drive not so much to unload their trucks

Convenience for the warehouses

There are many warehouses across the country and not all of them are allowed to hire or should we say won’t hire the extra help and pay the Lumpers’ wages. Most of the jobs do not require full time employees and therefore it would be too costly to have to pay a person a full day’s wages.

If a driver spends several hours unloading their truck then that takes away from their driving time for the week. If they are people who drive OTR everyday then they don’t have enough log book time to throw away unloading the truck. There are absolutely no rules that say that you can’t make extra money unloading your truck, but the company and/or the broker pays the lumper fees from their money they receive from the customers. You might as well let the Lumpers provide for their families and you get some rest.

The warehouses like Lumpers because it makes the warehousemen’s job all that much easier because they don’t have to waste time teaching drivers how to stack the items they way that there particular warehouse wants them stacked. They can continue to work and get their job completed.

Many humpers work from truck stops, especially in metropolitan areas where many moves are made every day. Some can be found from the local moving companies. Usually drivers find someone in an area of the country that they frequent and they will try to use the same people over and over. If you’re new to the job then maybe you need to call the local representative of your company and they will help you locate good workers. Also there is always the job centers located in the cities.

Do You Love an Alcoholic-Stop Rescuing and Enabling (Part 1)

[ad_1]

Do you love an alcoholic? How can you live with an alcoholic and love them at the same time? Very carefully. It’s true, it is very difficult to live with an alcoholic, but people do it all the time. Alcohol controls the mind and spirit of a person, so in affect as long as the alcoholic is drinking you will not get much love in return. Being married to an alcoholic is not a reason for divorce. It is reason for helping your loved one with the disease. Alcohol addiction is called the insidious disease for a reason. It breaks up homes, kills lives, and keeps them from discovering the Creator. Can it get anymore insidious than that?

A person who drinks excessively is called an alcoholic but that is not who they are. A person who drives a truck is called a trucker, but that is not who they are. I believe alcohol addiction to be a phase or transition of a person’s life, meaning it can be temporary. But many alcoholics become sober only to start drinking again, soon after, why? It is because they think they are in control of their addiction, but they aren’t. If a person truly wants to get sober and stay sober, they will.

The person behind the destruction and deception of alcohol is a totally different person when they have been sober for six months. A sober alcoholic can be a very loving and spiritual human being who is able to discern right from wrong and able to live a happy and abundant life. As long as the alcoholic remains drinking, his true character remains hidden from others, and will be under the control of the drink in every aspect of his life.

What can you do for the alcoholic in your life? The first step in helping them is to first help yourself. Become knowledgeable about the disease. Once you realize the impact of how your actions may be affecting the alcoholic in your life, you can detach properly from their destructive behavior. Detaching can be difficult to do but if you love the alcoholic and want to be supportive, detaching with love is the way to go.

Are you enabling your loved one to drink? Are you rescuing them from their problems and responsibilities? Ask yourself these questions to find out?

Am I doing anything that would enable the alcoholic to drink?

Am I doing anything that would facilitate the alcoholic’s behavior?

Am I doing anything that would rescue the alcoholic from his problems?

Am I getting driven into the disease with the alcoholic?

The only way to truly be supportive is don’t rescue, don’t enable, and don’t allow yourself to get driven into the disease with them. Here are some of the ways you enable the alcoholic.

You enable when you take up the slack for the alcoholic by doing their chores, duties and responsibilities. You enable when you give the alcoholic money or buy them booze.

You enable when you drink with them, or when you do anything to help the alcoholic to continue to live his alcoholic lifestyle and not realize that he has a drinking problem. If you do everything for him, how will he know?

Here are some of the ways you would rescue the alcoholic? You rescue when you sweep the alcoholic’s messes under the rug. The alcoholic NEEDS to be responsible for his own mess. You rescue when you lie for them. You rescue when you bail them out of jail or pay court fees for them.

Understand that the enabler/rescuer, which is you, help the alcoholic to continue drinking when you unintentionally become entangled within the deception of the disease with them. Remember, alcoholism is an insidious disease, and it will trap you in its grip if you allow it to. Don’t allow this to happen, or there will be no hope in the alcoholic to ever stop drinking.

How would you become driven into the disease with the alcoholic? By trying to control the alcoholic and how and when he drinks. By threatening the alcoholic with angry words and name calling, you are driving yourself into alcoholism. Don’t fuss, fight, argue, plead or try to control the alcoholic – it won’t work!

When the alcoholic spouse tells you they are sorry for anything bad they did against the marriage or you, they probably are really sorry, but that does not mean that it won’t happen again. An alcoholic can’t control their actions once they start drinking. The drinking is what makes them out of control and under the enslavement of the disease.

There is great hope for the alcoholic in your life, if you take care of yourself first, by not enabling, rescuing or getting driven into the disease. Once you are aware of what you should and should not do, you will be free to set boundaries for yourself in the home. An alcoholic will not abide by any boundaries, so it would be fruitless to try. You are setting boundaries for your own spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being, not the alcoholic’s. See part 2 of this article for setting boundaries.

Steam Cleaning Vs Dry Cleaning – What To Know

[ad_1]

Commercial carpet cleaning can be either steam cleaned or dry-cleaned but which is the best to use. Both of these methods have their drawbacks and benefits.

Steam cleaning

Because steam is used to clean the carpet, it is the one most preferred. It is also an effective method for carpet cleaning. Steam cleaning will remove the dirt and help to increase the life of your carpet. This is also called hot water extraction. Commercial carpet cleaning using the steam cleaning method has two methods that you can use.

• Portable extraction-this is generally used in industries that are involved in the business of cleaning carpets. The suction machine is not as strong as the truck mount machine. Steam cleaning the carpet is used for big-scale carpet cleaning in hospitals, apartments and more

• Truck mount-the pressurized hot water is mixed with a carpet cleaning solution that is non-toxic to remove soil and dirt from the carpet. You can remove deep-settled dirt in the carpet also.

Drawbacks

• It takes a long time to dry

• While drying the dirt can resettle back down on the carpet

• If not dried properly it could lead to fungal or bacterial growth on the carpet

Dry-cleaned

Even though it states “dry-cleaned” this does not mean that you use no water at all but there is very little used. When using this method commercial carpet cleaning services have four methods to choose from.

• Dry compound-a dry compound is spread over your carpet and left to dry for a time. This mixture will absorb the dirt from the carpet. After the specified time for this compound to be left on the carpet, it is then removed with a vacuum cleaner.

• Dry chem-this is similar to the dry foam method with the difference being which machine to use. In this method, you would use the bonnet pad and not the vacuum cleaner. The bonnet pad will scrub your carpet and then absorb the dirt.

• Dry foam-shampoo is applied to the carpet and left to dry. While drying the shampoo will absorb the dirt. Use a vacuum to suck up the dried shampoo/

• Oscillating pad-the first step to spray a balanced pH spray onto the carpet and left for a certain period of time. Generally, this is from thirty to sixty minutes. This spray reacts with the dirt to loosen it so it can be removed with a cotton pad.

Drawbacks

• It is not as effective as steam cleaning

• Leaves residue in the carpet that does not completely go away

• Because of left over residue in the carpet, more dirt will settle into the carpet and slowly decrease the life of the carpet.

Benefits of Hiring Truck Accident Lawyers After a Tractor Trailer Crash

[ad_1]

If you were injured after a tractor trailer collided with your car, you should start browsing truck accident lawyers serving your area. You should make sure to hire this type of attorney as opposed to legal professionals who mostly handle car accidents. Find out why this is.

In most cases, the drivers of tractor trailers are employees who are on the job. By contrast, when you are hit by another car, the driver is typically an individual who is not currently on his or her company’s clock. For this reason, different laws could apply to the case. Most good truck accident lawyers are aware of the laws governing cases of this type. For example, workers compensation may be a big factor in the case. In addition, you will be dealing with the insurance provider of the employer, not the provider of the typical driver. One major difference is the amount of coverage on the policy. You need a lawyer who knows how to handle a case of this magnitude.

Similarly, most experienced truck accident lawyers are well versed in tractor trailer malfunctions. For instance, there may be common problems with certain trucks that could have contributed to the crash. In such a case, you might need to include the manufacturer of the vehicle in your lawsuit. Your attorney should be able to research issues related to the brakes, tires, and other components of any trucks involved in the collision. Not all attorneys are adept at this, which is why you need to find one with experience with cases like yours.

Not surprisingly, many accidents involving large trucks are more serious than those involving only smaller cars. This means your injuries or property damage could be more severe or expensive than usual, and you need a lawyer who is prepared to deal with the results. For example, the compensation you seek could be greater than the typical collision case involving smaller vehicles. Make sure the lawyer you choose is ready to request the kind of compensation you need to pay for your property damage and medical bills, as well as those of any passengers who were also involved in the crash.

As you look for truck accident lawyers, you should find out if you can see a case history before making a decision. You deserve to know how many cases like yours the attorney in question has won. This can help you choose the right firm and have confidence as you proceed with your lawsuit.

How to Avoid Damaging Potholes

[ad_1]

Potholes can cause a wide-range of problems for cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, semis, and more. Even though we all try to avoid them as best we can, there are still times we let our guards down and hit one. Fortunately, there are a few interesting and unique tricks that can help us drivers reduce the amount of potholes we come into contact with every day. Continue reading to learn how to better avoid destructive potholes, and where to go if your vehicle is damaged by them.

Pothole Damage in Vehicles

There are a few indications that point toward pothole damage in a vehicle. As a car or truck owner, you want to keep an eye for tire punctures, bent rims, scraped wheels, suspension troubles, exhaust system troubles, poor steering, and any other physical exterior damages. Strange noises from the engine, engine complications, and a bouncy ride can all be warning signs of pothole damage. If your vehicle is experiencing any of these signs and indication, you must seek professional diagnostic services from a licensed mechanic if you wish to keep your car for a long time.

Here are some helpful hints on how to avoid damaging potholes:

  • Always Stay Focused on the Road and Keep a Lookout for Holes, Cracks, Crevices, and other Road Obstructions
  • Keep a Legal and Safe Distance Between Your Vehicle and the Vehicle in Front of You
  • Never Swerve Away From a Pothole-Brake Gently and Ride Over It

  • Watch Out for Hidden Potholes in Large Puddles of Water

Pothole Prevention

If you are a commercial property owner, it is in your best interest to maintain a safe and functional premises to avoid any liability, but also to attract more business with better curb appeal. Pothole prevention starts with accurate paving installation, and ends with on-going pavement maintenance. Be sure to choose a licensed and insured paving company for asphalt and concrete pavement installation. They can implement the proper paving strategies to protect your investment for years to come. As for routine maintenance, be sure you are providing regular debris removal, street sweeping, and annual sealcoating.

These are all effective methods towards protecting your commercial pavement from potholes and other types of damage. But if you already have potholes, you can benefit from pavement repair, which may include crack filling, patching, and sealcoating. If your pavement is extensively damaged, you would benefit the most from a complete demolition and repaving service. If it is still structurally sound, your pavement may be a good candidate for an overlay, which is cheaper and less invasive than a complete repaving project.

Demystifying Freight for Retail Startups

[ad_1]

As a new retail business owner, you have many concerns regarding your footprint and how you will not only get in front of customers but find a way to transport your products to them, as well as to your suppliers, distribution centers, manufacturers, partners and warehouses. That’s a lot of shipments to think about!

Not only do you have to coordinate those shipments with different people across different companies and different locations around the world, but now you have to navigate the freight and transportation industry. And industry that has been around since the 1950s in the United States. And, you have to find your niche so you’re not overpaying or losing money on damage claims.

As a startup, you won’t have the initial volume of shipments that a traditional freight carrier or common carrier requires in order to give you the best rate on shipping freight. Luckily for you, the industry has resolved that by creating brokers or third-party logistics providers (3PLs) that consolidate shipments with smaller-volume shippers so that they together get the buying power of a giant shipper. Sounds good, right?

In some cases, a 3PL has trucks or is considered “asset based”. That can be a benefit to some shippers who have identical shipments moving back and forth along the same highways on a frequent basis. But, not every logistics need is the same and it’s beneficial to work with a 3PL that can find you capacity (aka room on a truck) and that isn’t confined to working with their own trucks.

A 3PL can save you time and money by finding competitive freight rates and services instantly. Once they find a rate, they also handle everything else with the carrier from the date of pickup to delivery. By far the easiest way to save money, is working with a well-known 3PL that has the most carrier contracts. Chances are, they have the best negotiated rate.

Now that you know what type of partner you need to handle your logistics needs, here are the materials you need and four steps to packaging your shipments.

Materials You Will Need:

  • 70-gauge Shrink Wrap (stretchable plastic film)
  • Corrugated Cardboard Boxes
  • Strapping Tape
  • Wooden or Plastic Pallet
  • Wooden or Plastic Crate (included and delivered with our You Crate shipping partners)
  • Foam Padding or Bubble Wrap
  • Rope or Pallet Straps

Freight Packaging Steps

Step #1: Determine whether your freight is considered fragile or non-fragile.

Fragile

  • Glass
  • Computer Equipment
  • Electronics (all types)
  • Small Furniture
  • Household Goods (liquids, etc)
  • Personal Effects
  • Artwork/Fine Art/Sculptures

Non Fragile

  • Clothing and Footwear
  • Paper Items
  • Plastic Items
  • Canned Goods
  • Carpeting and Flooring
  • Tools and Hardware
  • Machinery

Step #2: Determine if your freight should be palletized.

Items That Need To Be Shipped On A Pallet:

  • Machinery
  • Heavy Equipment
  • Engines
  • Compressors
  • Lawn Mower
  • Motorcycle
  • Ovens/Stoves
  • Dishwashers
  • Washing Machines/ Dryer
  • Fridge
  • Sofa
  • Tables/Desks and Chairs
  • Large Furniture & Televisions

Step #3: Safely package the contents of your freight.

  • Safeguard against spills and stains by placing vulnerable items in individual plastic bags before packing inside a box or crate

Step #4: Secure and label the outside of your packaged freight.

  • Do not use household scotch tape or masking tape. Aim for commercial-grade, durable strapping tape at least two inches in width
  • Each box should require at least three pieces of tape along the open seams

After reading this, you should feel empowered to make smart decisions about shipping and logistics. And also know that there are many like you who are thinking about growth and scalability. After all, you won’t be able to call three carriers and wait on the line for freight quotes for every shipment forever.
