Intoxicated With Happiness

Recently there has been much publicity about the dangers of texting, talking on the phone, posting, and taking selfies when you are driving. On April 24, 2014 a young woman in North Carolina posted on twitter how happy she was while listening to the Happy Song on the radio. A minute later there was an emergency call. She had gone into the wrong lane while she was posting and hit a waste management truck head on. The car swerved off the road and caught fire. By the time help arrived she was dead.

While everyone wants happiness, sometimes your level of euphoria can get so high that you lose your reasoning capacity. It creates the same effect as alcohol or drugs where the pleasure center of the brain get stimulated and the reasoning centers of the brain don’t work as well. Although the effect is much less intense than alcohol or drugs, it impairs reasoning.

The brain has chemicals that make you feel pleasurable feelings. Serotonin is the chemical that makes you able to feel good even when nothing exciting happens. Dopamine makes you go into a happy stupor when you just had good news. That is not a bad thing. norepinephrine makes you excited and ebullient. Some people who have a deficiency of these chemicals need antidepressant medication.

When you are very happy and excited, these chemicals get secreted in greater amounts than the usual. It can create a decrease in your reasoning capacities. Suddenly you feel as if the laws of nature do not apply to you. For example, you don’t have to drive right, study for a test, or do anything that is a nuisance. The feelings are addicting so you don’t want to stop feeling this high and go back to your duties. A basic example would be when you go out to lunch with a friend, have a great time but then let out a sigh when you change your thoughts back to the afternoon work agenda.

You might ask, “So was should never get very happy so we can survive, who wants to do that”? No the trick is to keep thinking and to realize that you can return to your euphoria later. When you are doing something that requires concentration, being present with your endeavor is a form of quiet happiness. Even if you drive down the same road every day driving down it and focusing on your driving is not only good sense but you always feel happy when your mind is in the present moment. You can return to feeling good about your good news. If you are happy about a song on the radio you will do okay enjoying it now and texting your friends only when you get to your destination. You will live, both literally and figuratively.

When you feel intense emotion, whether it is happy or unhappy, your lower brain gets active and your higher brain (cerebral cortex) is not as active. Alcohol and drugs intensify this. This is why it is important to focus and think when you do an activity. You re capture the happy feeling when you finish the task and enjoy it safely.

Finally, by writing this I am not condemning the woman who died in the accident. Anything that happens is meaningful. Her death is meaningful as it can make others aware of the dangers of texting and driving. It can save lives.

How to Modify Fuel Injectors

There was a day when finding inexpensive aftermarket injectors to support 500-600rwhp were tough. There were few options for high impedance style injectors, other than the Ford Motorsport 42lbs or MSD 50lb units. The aftermarket fuel injector industry has progressed rapidly over the past several years and as a result there are many brands and sizes available for most performance enthusiasts. Larger injectors are necessary to support higher horsepower levels on modified cars. As a rule of thumb the following equations are useful when selecting the right size injector to support the required horsepower level.

To calculate the size for a particular application:

– Injector Flow Rate (lb/hr) = Engine HP(1) x BSFC(2) – Number of Injectors x Injector duty cycle(3)

Or

– Injector Flow Rate (cc/min) = Engine HP(1) x BSFC(2) x 10.5 – Number of Injectors x Injector duty cycle(3)

An old trick that some of the “Tuners” used to do was modify the 30lb/36lb Ford Motorsport units to increase the flow rate. There are still street/strip racers using these modified injectors today with great results for the intended purpose. Generally, 30lb injectors becom 47lb injectors and 36lb injectors may become 66lb / 72lb / 77lb injectors.

Furthermore, there are some original equipment manufacturer bosch style units used by Ford that can also be modified to flow 47lbs. This method of modifying certain Ford/Bosch style injectors will dramatically increase fuel delivery without significantly compromising the injector spray pattern or vehicle emissions. From a very high level, here are the steps to modify fuel injectors;

  1. Remove the pintle cap, o-ring and insulator.
  2. Remove the difusser plate by filing around the weld.
  3. Install new pintle caps, o-rings and insulator.
  4. Have theunits flow tested and ultrasonically cleaned by a professional service shop.

The problem is that the actual procedure is not well known and it is very easy to destroy a fuel injector if done improperly. Care needs to be taken when removing the difusser plate, and the injectors must be flow tested and ultrasonically cleaned (a good practice for used injectors) to verify the flow rate. Once the injector size is known the computer/maf can be calibrated to match the new flow rate to ensure proper air to fuel ratio (this is something that needs to be done regardless of what aftermarket fuel injector is used).

When this procedure is properly performed, these modified fuel injectors work very well and will easily support street/strip cars easily generating 400-600 horsepower. There are many still being used today. It is still an economical way to obtain larger units for those car owners on a limited budget.

Good manners when driving on public roads are an aid to safety and reduce personal stress. Follow these simple hints and observations to make your driving day more pleasurable.

1. In heavy rain do not use your emergency light or High-Beam. If the emergency light, is partly obscured, it could give an other driver a turning signal thus causing an accident. The glare from the High-Beam could blind an oncoming driver. Use your normal “dipped” headlight, stay to the curb side of the road and double your normal “safe stopping” distance from the car in front of you until the road is dry.

2. Use of “flashing” High Beam as a signal to other drivers.There is NO written law about this. It is a practice that varies from country to country. In Europe, if a car flashes you from behind, he is asking you to yield (give over) so that he can pass. It is also used to tell cars in other lanes that you will yield so that they can get into the traffic stream. Example in Thailand the reverse happens. A Thai driver will warn others that he is “coming-through” so then flash you to ask you to “hold back”. This is because the Thais do not have Right of Way rules. Further, it is customary in most countries to wave a hand or nod the head by way of thanks for being let-in or let through the traffic. Taking your hand off the wheel, however, or breaking your attention to the traffic is dangerous, so DON’T DO IT unless you have a clear road ahead.

3. Parking your car for a short-stay, with emergency lights blinking, is not respected in Thailand or most other countries. You just cause inconvenience to others and will get a traffic fine.

4. Braking.

European drivers are trained to look into their rear mirrors before applying the foot brake. If you keep a “safe stopping distance” between you and the car in front (double on a wet road) then there should be no problem. If a driver enters your path from a side road or a motorway lane… decrease speed until a new “safe stopping distance” is achieved. Don’t expect him to speed-up. He may have a slower car than yours.

5. Reduce speed in a built-up are and go even slower when passing a school or a children’s play area.

6. The yellow (Amber) traffic light.

The green light changes to red after the amber has given warning that the light will change soon. Slow down and prepare to stop on the amber light, you’ll just live longer.

7. Keep to the edge of the road. Most oriental people have bad peripheral vision so tend to stay in the middle off the road. When the have to turn a corner they cut across the corner risking a collision with on-coming traffic. When turning corners in Thailand be very careful as the oncoming drivers may not see you.

Driving manners and practices are very important. It is best to let the other car go first and wait. Patience and consideration for others is absolutely essential

During these years, he also met his then-girlfriend Juliette Lewis during the filming of a TV movie Too Young to Die. Unfortunately, his next few films The Favor, Johnny Suede, and Cool World were not enough to boost his credibility as an actor and just garnered him the title of a Hollywood pretty boy. His next major role which again garnered much critical attention was in the movie Interview with the Vampire with Tom Cruise. His following films Legends of the Fall and Seven only secured his place in Hollywood. During the filming of Seven, he met and fell in love at first sight with then quite unknown actress Gwyneth Paltrow and eventually got engaged after two and a half years together. Sadly, the couple split for unknown reasons seven months after their engagement.

Pitt went on to star in critically acclaimed films such as Devil’s Own, Seven Years in Tibet, Meet Joe Black, and Twelve Monkeys for which he won a Golden Globe as best supporting actor. He later reteamed with David Fincher, director of Seven, to shoot the film Fight Club which soon became a cult film. Soon after, Pitt worked on more critically acclaimed films such as Snatch, Troy, and the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. In 2005, he worked on the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Angelina Jolie, whom he would later end up with three adopted children and three biological children. Brad Pitt earlier had gotten married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston in 2000, but had a divorce in 2005. Pitt’s films during those years included Babel, Burn After Reading, and Ocean’s Twelve and Thirteen. His latest film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button received many nominations at the Academy Award including Pitt’s first Best Actor nomination. Complain Endlessly

14Do everything readily and cheerfully-no bickering, no second-guessing allowed!

Wow, this is a bit strong on an empty stomach. But isn’t this what we all do? As soon as something less nice happens or we face some challenge that takes a bit too much energy, we’re quick to complain. As soon as I start struggling I’m on my prayer telephone moaning to God. Why is this happening to me? Why do I have to struggle so much? Look at the other people around me. They get all the good times. And so we keep on complaining.

I think we complain so easily because we don’t really know what it’s all about. We complain from a lack of wisdom and all we see is the problem. We don’t see the bigger picture and the easiest response is to complain.

A friend invited me to attend the Global Leadership Summit. One of the topics under discussion was feedback. What do we do with feedback? When we receive feedback from someone else, we quickly take offence if it’s not what we want to hear. Sometimes we go to another person looking for the opposite kind of feedback. And what does my friend to whom I complain say? “No, it’s really bad of person A to say that about you.”

But maybe your fiend doesn’t mean it. Your friend might agree with person A, he knows what she said is the truth, but because you’re complaining and not taking the feedback wisely, your friend takes the easiest way out and supports your rebelliousness. Another opportunity to grow is lost because you complain instead of acting in a mature way and using other people’s feedback for your own good.

We must remember that we don’t get the inside track. Believing in God doesn’t make circumstances easier. On the contrary! Many people’s lives become more difficult because they stand up for their faith. We must remember that others watch us. We must show them our wisdom, that we won’t fold under pressure, and that we will bear our struggles like children of God.

No, it’s not easy and sometimes it feels as if I’m biting my tongue in half, trying not to speak my mind. But then I hold back hard, because I know the words that are trying to come out will not promote the Kingdom of God. But this has tripped me up many, many times. My blood boils too quickly and before I know it, I’m complaining endlessly.

All of us have stumbled at this obstacle. But we have to get back up, dust ourselves off and try again. The trying again and again makes us stronger and the more experienced we get, the less we complain and argue.

I’ve learnt a lot from Christa:

Looking back on my life, God has been wonderful. At 27, with three small children, I had a hysterectomy and mastectomy. But all the time my wonderful husband supported me.

In 2009, eight of us were coming back from training in a kombi. A big truck with a trailer made a U-turn in from of us and the kombi crashed into the truck. One woman lost her life. Another suffered serious injuries, which were followed by multiple operations. I had to undergo eight back operations, but nothing is too much for God.

I fell ill, suffering from serious Osteoarthritis, Parkinson’s epilepsy and hardening of the arteries in my head. But God helped.

I was attacked on my farm, my own firearm was held against my head, but God spared me.

In February, a friend and I drove through Magoebaskloof. Our car slid and rolled down the mountain. My friend crawled back up to the road on all fours. God sent someone to help us.

God helps people who believe. That ship will come and I will be able to afford the right medical treatment again. The answer simply is to believe.

Christa’s story leaves me speechless. One setback after the other, but no complaints – only glory to the helping God.

One day when I’m grown up, I want to be able to deal with life’s setbacks without fighting and arguing.

Lithium-Ion Battery Pack

Batteries today are omnipresent today that they are invisible to us. Running in cars, digital cameras, drones, bulbs, mechanical tools, inverters, ships, trains, airplanes, windmills and even in satellites. The basic science behind the battery is chemical energy converting to electrical energy containing three main components: Anode, Cathode, and Electrolyte. The revolution in the battery over the years are through several stages of chemical combinations and implementations. Starting from Voltaic Pile to Daniell Cell, then from Lead-Acid to Nickel Cadmium battery, further evolving to Alkaline Battery, Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and then finally to Lithium-ion battery. These are available in all shapes and sizes as per the need along with its possibly packed power capacity.

Working: The Lithium-ion battery pack consist of graphite, oxygen, metal, and of course lithium, which runs in a cycle of discharging and charging. While producing energy, the lithium moves back to the positive cathode across the electrolyte, and while charging, the ions move to the positive anode. This cycle repeats over the course of time and degrades the potency of the ions in providing the electric charge. The lithium-ion has 250Wh/kg (Watt-hours per kilogram) of energy while NiMH has mere 90Wh/kg. This is a vast difference for a small, portable and noiseless rechargeable battery.

Concern Parameters: The 10 parameters that a Lithium-ion battery pack’s development covers are high specific energy, specific power, affordable cost, longer life, better safety, wide temperature operating range, non-toxic, fast charging, lower self-discharge and longer shelf life. In the early stages, the cost of a Li-ion battery was $3000 per kWh, while Lead-acid battery cost $150 per kWh. But over the years, due to multiple benefits of Li-ion battery pack, being 150Wh/kg more than the NiMH, the cost is dramatically falling costing now $150 to $240 per kWh. Tesla’s goal is to reach $100 per kWh on lithium-ion battery packs for the cars.

NEW ERA: In 2005, there was a total of around $4900mil in the sales of lithium-ion batteries while in 2015 it is spiked to $15200mil wherein $4800mil is in automotive alone. It is expected to reach 10% on the total number of cars on the road to be battery EVs by 2020 from 0.3% today and to 35% by 2035. There is an even higher growth rate in China, Europe, and Japan when compared to the US. Statistically consuming 1900TWh for Li-ion battery pack by 2035, which is equivalent to power the whole of US for 160days.

FUTURE: There is still a lot to develop the battery technology as over the years we haven’t come up with anything further than lithium-ion battery packs configured in parallel or series to deliver the desired voltage, power density, and capacity. We sure have changed the contents and the proportion of the combination of raw materials to enhance the capabilities, but there is still a lot of work that has to be put into the battery technology. The targets are to reach over 700Wh/kg to that of 400Wh/kg we are on today. By 2020, 75% of batteries are expected to contain cobalt, in some capacity at least along with better anodes and enhancing electrolytes.

It is fun to watch a Tesla Car glide down the road and know that it is all-electric, still, the industry has a ways to go before electric cars can compete on price for the consumer – before wide adoption is fully feasible. Trust me when I tell you, I am not against EVs, it’s just I see so many challenges – cost, weight, subsidies, efficiencies, range, charging infrastructure, etc. And, I cringe when I listen to folks explain how to pave that proverbial ‘road to hell’ with the Good Intentions Paving Company LLC. Okay so, let’s talk shall we?

Here are a Five Points on the Future of Electric Vehicles and the Real Challenges Facing the Industry:

1). Current Battery Weight: EV batteries significantly increase the weight of cars – proponents say that’s okay because new lightweight materials will keep weight down. True, but if those lightweight materials can do that, they can do it also for gasoline, diesel, natural gas, hydrogen or steam run cars too. Meaning more competition, A 100 mpg car due to low weight is now a huge selling point.

2). End of Life Battery Disposal: Where do all these batteries go with chemicals that are not so good for environment? Proponents say; it’s not that big of deal. Still, if old cell phones are considered hazardous waste partly due to the batteries inside, then car batteries which are much bigger with huge amounts of material are even more problematic.

3). Slow Growth: Currently electric vehicles make us such a small percentage of the total, that they are not making any real difference in the use of fossil fuels, so if that is the goal, it will take decades to achieve and need massive government intervention – hasn’t government intervened in the free-markets enough lately (Healthcare, Biofuels for instance) and how has that worked out for us?

4). Electric Vehicle Rebates: When government gives rebates we all end up paying for it in higher taxes. If EVs cost on average $10,000 more, and we give rebates, we are subsidizing a sector over another sector, picking and choosing winners. It’s wiser to allow EV industry to pony up and find ways to lower prices to compete.

5). Electric Vehicles Are Quiet: Proponents say that’s a good thing. But, tell that to the kid or cyclist that didn’t hear them coming and got smushed. Some EVs now have “sound” to alert people they are coming, and you can choose the sound you like, several options. That’s nice, but defeats the concept and/or benefits of such serenity associated with EVs. Sound also takes energy to make, ask any audio installer of sound systems for cars, often a second battery or batteries is/are added for larger systems.

The electric vehicle industry will have to solve these challenges before consumers will have full buy-in or before EVs can supplant the cars we drive today. Please consider this.
