Pinstriping Brushes – 3 Tips on Care and Maintenance of Pinstriping Brushes

[ad_1]

If you want to create the perfect pinstriping designs on any vehicle you need to make sure that the brushes you use have been well cared for. In this article we offer some tips on how to care for pinstriping brushes so that they won’t have to be replaced any time soon.

1. The glue used to hold the bristles of the pinstriping brushes to the handle are water soluble and if exposed to water too much then it will become softened. Because of this the hairs will eventually become loose and start to fall out so avoid cleaning them in water if you can.

To clean the brush it is far better if you use a mineral spirit instead. It is best to initially rinse the brushes in the minerals spirits you have been using for cleaning the pallet whilst you are pinstriping. Although the cup in which the spirits is may look unusable remember you are using this to get most of the paint out of the brush.

After you have rinsed in the used spirits now to get rid of even more of the paint wipe the brush with a paper towel. Then having poured some fresh mineral spirits into another cup or jar you will be able to wash the rest of the paint out from it. Remember don’t just to wash the hairs of the brushes in the spirits but also the furrel as well.

You will recognize that your brush is thoroughly clean because no more paint will appear on the fresh paper towel you have used. After you are happy that the pinstriping brushes have been thoroughly cleaned you squeeze a small amount of 3 in 1 oil on to it and then shape it with your fingers. Using the oil prevents any oil that remains not to become and hardened and which could ultimately ruin the brush.

2. Although you may find it difficult to handle the brushes initially you should never be tempted to trim them. Sometimes however there may be a need to remove a small amount of the brushes tip but b before you do so you need to look closely at your pinstriping brush first. If you then decide to trim off any of the hairs then do so very carefully.

When trimming it is crucial that you oil the brush first as this will help it form the natural shape and then lay the brush flat on a sheet of paper or some other white surface. Doing this you will then see just what needs to be trimmed and very carefully using a sharp razor blade trim only the smallest amounts of the brushes hair as you need to from the tip. If you take off too much hair this will make the tip of the brush blunt and it won’t be able to create those perfect pinstripes for you.

3. If you find that your brushes begin to develop kinks or waves in them then you should find this problem relatively easy to fix. To remove these kinks or waves you first need to rinse any pinstriping brushes thoroughly in the mineral spirits and then rinse them very carefully in water. However, you must make sure that the furrel into which the hairs are set does not get wet and then dab the brushes on a paper towel to help remove as much water as possible.

After removing as much of the excess water as you can now add a little dish soap to the hairs and then shape the brush using your fingers. If the problem isn’t too severe then lay the pinstriping brushes flat, but if it is then put it between the pages of a book which will help to press it flat. You need to leave the brushes like this for around a week then after this time rinse the soap out with mineral spirits and hopefully its original shape will have been restored.

The Benefits of Using a Northern Irish Plate

[ad_1]

Northern Irish plates are different to those in the rest of the British Isles. And they have one incredibly useful advantage – they are considered dateless. There is no letter in any series to indicate years.

The format of Irish plates is typically 2 or 3 letters followed by up to 4 digits and unlike the English, Welsh and Scottish plates, the letters I and Z can be used.

If at one time, the Northern Ireland number plates were considered ‘the poor relation’, they can not be considered like that any more. With dateless plates increasing in demand and the ease of which you can create name plates, some Northern Irish plates have become investment plates.

At the same time, however, they do allow a lot of people join the personalised plate ladder. Lots of younger drivers want to personalise their plate as much as they personalise their car and having a Northern Irish plate allows them to do that. With prices starting from as low as £50, they are a very real option to get a cheap personalised plate.

Northern Ireland is divided up into eight separate licensing areas. They are:

  • Belfast which issued the ‘_AZ’ and ‘IFZ’ registrations (e.g., BAZ, DAZ)
  • Enniskillen which issued ‘_IL’, ‘IIG’ currently issuing ‘KIG’ (e.g., GIL, BIL)
  • Downpatrick which issued ‘_BZ’ and currently issuing ‘SJZ’ (e.g., ABZ)
  • Ballymena which issued ‘_KZ’ and currently issuing ‘DRZ’ (e.g., UKZ)
  • Coleraine which issued ‘_NZ’ and currently issuing ‘RNZ’ (e.g., LNZ)
  • Londonderry which issued ‘_UI’ and currently issuing ‘TUI’ (e.g., OUI)
  • Omagh which issued ‘_JI’, ‘_HZ’ and currently issuing OHZ (e.g., PJI, CHZ)
  • Armagh which issued ‘_IB’ and currently issuing ‘CXZ (e.g., GIB, RIB)

Clever use of names

The most sought after plates are those dateless plates that spell out names or nicknames. Because Northern Irish plates use ‘I’ and ‘Z’, there is room or scope to spell out names.

Here are a few to get you thinking:

  • Barry (BAZ)
  • Gary (GAZ)
  • Katherine (KAZ)
  • Catherine (CAZ)
  • Darren (DAZ)
  • Raza (RAZ)
  • Sarah (SAZ)
  • Jeremy (JEZ)
  • Terry (TEZ)
  • JIL (Jill)
  • GIL (Gillian)
  • PJI (Patrick James or Peter Joseph)

And while the Northern Irish plates have formats and words that suit names, they also work well with interests.

Here’s a few more to get you thinking:

  • Show your love of France or your French nationality – OUI
  • If you have a Mercedes, feel free to use – MBZ
  • If you have a Volkswagen, car, you can use – VIW
  • Show your passion for the Welsh when you use – WLZ
  • Display your nationality with pride with – UKZ

So in summary, you can use a personalised Northern Irish number plate to:

  • Hide the age of your vehicle
  • Get a cheaper personalised number plate
  • Display your name
  • Show your nationality.

When thinking about a personalised number plate, Northern Irish number plates should be top of your list.

Powder Coating 101: How Does It Work?

[ad_1]

Everybody is talking about the process of powder coating automotive parts. Powder coating has grown in popularity over the past few years for a number of reasons. How many of us see powder coating being used on shows like “American Chopper” or “Overhaulin'”? The general public knows from watching these shows that powder coating is out there. But what is powder coating and how exactly is it done? Anybody know?

Preparation is imperative in achieving a quality finish. The item being coated must be completely bare of any paint, dirt, oil, or any other substance. To achieve this, sandblasting equipment is used. If it is not possible to use this equipment, it must be done with chemicals or by hand. The items are then baked to remove any moisture from the metal. After all materials have been stripped off, the item is treated with a degreasing solution to help prevent corrosion.

Powder coating is a process by which selected items are coated with a fine powder of ground resin and pigment, which is basically ground up paint particles that form a powder-like substance. The items being coated are placed on a rack, which grounds the items. A gun is used to spray the powder onto the items. A large oven is then used to heat and cure the coating. Temperatures used to cure the items typically are between 400 and 450 degrees. Heating the items makes the pigments melt, gel, and then cure to form a durable finish. The finished product is a uniform coating. Powder coating can be used on steel, zinc, and aluminum as well as other materials. The quality of the finished product has the ability to outlast and outperform painted parts. A variety of up to a few hundred different colors are available to choose from. It also exceeds paint in resisting acids, solvents, impact, and abrasions.

Powder coating can be used to coat items such as valve covers, wheels, bumpers, trim parts, engine parts, sway bars, coil springs, strut bars, and many items in between. There are many options as to who does the powder coating for you. There are companies in most metropolitan areas that either exclusively powder coat or companies that offer it along with their other services. Online companies also play into the equation with a number offering services as well. There are normally two systems for purchasing powder coated parts. For popular parts, companies may stock core parts available to be coated in a variety of colors. You order the part and ship yours back for a core. For more custom jobs, you must remove the part and ship it to the powder coater. Companies such as Eastwood also sell do-it-yourself kits. These kits start at $99 and you can use an electric oven or toaster oven to bake and cure the finish. An air compressor capable of a 5-10 PSI output is also required.

So the next time you hear about powder coating on TV or anywhere else, you will now have an idea of how that actual process is performed. Powder coating is superior to normal painting if you want a finish that holds up better and lasts longer. Check it out today!!

How to Disable a GPS System in Vehicles

[ad_1]

The scope and nature of technology has done great advancements and the GPS tracking system is one of them. The tracking device is touted to be the best, most driver-oriented automated device and fascinating, containing the electronic detailed road map, turning out as a boon for all of them who are on roads, especially when they are uncertain of a particular terrain as the GPS system is filled with accurate and essential information about the land marks, speed limits, alternate routes, distance readings, road routes, memory back-tracking and many other features to let the automobile owner how to get anywhere.

Suppose that for some reasons you want to get rid of the GPS system which is installed in your vehicle to track your movements. The GPS device is designed and installed in the vehicle which could be a car, truck or motorcycle to keep a track record of your position in space in spite of your actual location. The process takes only few minutes to show the current and actual existing location. Thus, mostly people prefer to get relieve from it.

Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to disable the GPS system of a vehicle. It is needed to be completely removed from the vehicle; it is a magnetic device box which is located elsewhere in the vehicle and is exceptionally complicated to find.

Now, the vehicle manufacturers are making such vehicles which have an in-built GPS system. This helps to retain the owner with a peace of mind that their car is secure and safe, and they can keep a check through the track record in a time of less than few minutes. The GPS system is useful in providing the information regarding the vehicle’s whereabouts to the owner who is sitting elsewhere.

Once you get to locate the GPS device which is installed in your vehicle, you can simply diffuse it by pulling out the fuse from the vehicle, but the device is mostly installed at an unknown place in the vehicle and is not easy to locate. Sometime the device is hidden and cannot be shutoff.

To disable the GPS device in the vehicle, you can get a GPS device signal tracking jammer. It is a small gadget which emits signal that jams any of the GPS devices with a radius of 5meters. This will be preventing the unit from transmitting the data, making you disappeared to those who are observing you.

You may need to purchase the GPS defense device to disable the tracking. The name of device is GPS Tracker Defense. Even though, it is extremely hard to find the device in United States, but it is easily available in United Kingdom. By year 2009, it was priced approx $200 and was available from spywarehouse.co.uk.

You only need to install the device in your vehicle. It will start working immediately to prevent any of the GPS tracking units attached to your cell phone or vehicle from transmitting the signals to the satellite. This will help you become invisible effectively. The navigation system in the vehicle will also be disabled.

How To Choose The Right Hubcaps For Your Car

[ad_1]

Hubcaps are fun to look at. There are so many different shapes and finishes to play with it would make your head spin. Now the fun part is based solely on you. When you find the set of hubcaps that is calling your name there is no denying the instant attraction. But is it all about looks and do you really need hubcaps?

The first question is who needs hubcaps? The easy answer is every driver who tries to stay within his or her budget. Some people love the look of flashy rims but others want the best of both worlds, the look of rims without the high price tag. Online car accessory retailers love people cater to people who are financially responsible but who won’t sacrifice an ounce of their personal style.

A great set of hubcaps can make an unmistakable fashion statement and can make any car stand out in a crowd. Some people go for the chrome while others prefer the sleek almost scary black hubcaps that look like they were birthed from the darkest part of the ocean. Some designs are simple and understated for the business professional, while others look like they want to transform before your very eyes and are perfect for the bold and daring. Still others prefer the classic chrome in modern shapes. Other abstract or free form designs seem as though they were fashioned with alien technology and sensibilities. In any case the tastes represented are wide and varied.

In the case of hubcaps size actually matters, in fact, it’s extremely important. After you figure out the style or look your want to give your ride its vital to get the correct measurement of the hubcap you will need. At this point most people will want to bring out the measuring tape and line it up against the round tire but this is a mistake. The only way to find out the size of your wheel cover is to verify the size of your tires. If you check the sides of your tire you will see a long code that ends in the letter “R” and another number. So if you see, for example, a code ending in R14 it means that you need 14″ hubcaps for your car. The code R15 corresponds to 15″, R16 corresponds to 16″ and so on.

Online retailers now offer the largest variety of sizes imaginable so you can get even the elusive 13″ hubcaps for your car. What’s more they come in many finishes and materials. Although many car buffs may have a preference for chrome, chrome and more chrome all over their cars, others may fall in love with the modern look of the sleek black hubcaps that are growing in popularity. So don’t hold back you can express yourself with any look you want without breaking the bank.

Causes of Fuel Pump Failure and Signs to Identify a Failing Fuel Pump

[ad_1]

Fuel pump is one of the most important components in a vehicle’s fuel delivery system. If it is doing well, fuel delivery system functions normally. But, once it fails, the car engine ceases to run. However, the failure and the inconvenience it causes can be prevented by identifying the early warning signs.

In this article, we will discuss the common causes of fuel pump failure and its warning signs.

Causes of failure: There are more than a couple of causes for its failure. They are as follows:

• Broken wiring: Broken or faulty wiring in the vehicle’s fuel system prevents the current flow to the fuel pump from the relay. Even the corroded, loose, melted or burnt wires/connectors, and poor electrical grounding can restrict the current or voltage flow from the relay to the fuel pump, thus, affecting its functioning – pumping fuel to the engine.

• Problems in the fuel tank: Presence of dust/debris, rust or dirty fuel in tank can result in its malfunctioning. During cool and humid weather, when the tank is low, it gets moist leading to the oxidation of the tank and formation of rust. As it is located inside the tank, the rust will be ingested in to the fuel pump, bringing about its failure.

• Clogged fuel filter: Usage of dirty fuel or presence of contaminants in the tank can clog the pickup strainer or filters present in the fuel lines. This results in low pressure and low peak flow of fuel that weaken its functioning.

Clogged filters are generally associated with damaged fuel line connectors/splits or cracked hoses or kinked fuel lines that lead to leakage of fuel. These cracks or leaks on the fuel lines can create vacuum leaks, which disturb the air-fuel ratio, thus, making the engine run lean.

• Driving with low fuel level: Its durability depends on the lubrication and the cooling provided by the fuel. Running your vehicle on a low gas tank frequently, may heat up the fuel tank much quicker, ultimately overheating the fuel pump. As a result, due to the lack of lubrication, it becomes dry and gets damaged.

Identifying a bad fuel pump: It shows many warning signs, which when identified at the right time, will avoid complete damage. A few warning signs are quite clearly evident if thoroughly checked – broken hoses, fuel leaks, discolored electrical terminals, burnt or bubbled plastic at the fuse, etc.

There are a few other warning signs that are displayed by the vehicle itself. They are as follows:

• Strange whining sounds: One of the early as well as the clear signs of failing fuel pump is the development of a high pitched screeching sound, when the engine is first engaged. However, the sound will slowly disappear after some time. Moreover, the sound is not the same for every vehicle. It may vary based on the type. An early inspection, after the development of such strange sounds will help save it from further damage.

• Engine misfires: A failing fuel pump may cause engine misfires that in turn will cause the car to jerk occasionally. Engine misfires may happen quite often, most probably 3-4 times, and later the vehicle may run smoothly for many miles. This sign translates to the wearing out of the fuel pump, because it is unable to maintain a steady fuel pressure.

• Problem in starting and accelerating: A failing or dead fuel pump may also prevent the engine from starting. If you are sure that the starter and the battery of your vehicle are good, and still you are facing a starting problem, then it is the sign of faulty relay. As already stated, faulty wiring harness can result in improper power supply to the fuel pump, thus, resulting in sluggish acceleration and starting troubles.

• Extended engine cranking time: In order to cool down the components of the fuel tank, maximum amount of fuel sent to the engine will be returned to the fuel tank. An anti-drain back valve in the outlet aids in this fuel returning process. Whenever the fuel pump stops functioning, the valve gets closed preventing the fuel from running back into the fuel tank. This condition can be identified by the extended cranking time while starting the vehicle.

• Engine loses power: This sign of engine losing power can be typically seen when the vehicle is running at high speeds, especially when climbing hills. If you are sure that there is nothing wrong with the fuel filter, it is safe to assume that it is failing.

On identifying the above issues in your fuel delivery system, it is better advised to get your vehicle checked by a good technician, who will further diagnose the issues by conducting fuel pressure and volume tests (through fuel pressure gauge), and the electrical checks (through digital volt & ohm meter). It is only after these tests, should you decide as to replace or fix your fuel pump.

Timely repairs or replacement will help you to solve the issues quickly. However, while replacing the fuel pump it is always better to opt for the best quality aftermarket products, offered by reputed dealers, to get more durable and better performing products.

The Differences Between OE OEM and OES Parts

[ad_1]

OE: Original Equipment:  This part is either made by the car manufacture or is made by an automotive part supplier and is branded with the car manufactures logo and/or in the car manufactures box.

OEM Original Equipment Manufacture

OES Original Equipment Supplier

Car manufacturers do not make all their parts that they put on their vehicles during assembly or repair, they contract out to auto part manufactures to make parts for them. For the most part the car manufacturer makes the body, frame and major engine components the rest they ‘farm out’ to OEM/OES manufacturers. The car manufacturer provides the specifications to the OEM/OES manufactures for the parts they need. The OEM/OES manufactures the part to these specs, adds a logo and ships it to the car manufacture.

Bosch, Bilstien, Boge, Beru, Mann, ATE, to name a few, are all OEM or OES suppliers to the car manufacturers. They make parts from spark plugs to exhaust parts. The difference between OE and OEM/OES is mainly the OEM/OES usually don’t have the car manufactures logo, but they are the same exact part. Sometimes the logo is ground off the part by the OEM/OES company so as not to affect there contract with the car manufacture. Same part coming off the same assembly line as the OE part does.

The OEM/OES parts are less expensive because they do not go through the car manufactures part system. Every time an OE part goes through a depot, warehouse, dealer, there is a little more money added to the cost of the part. This is the major reason that OE parts cost more. OEM/OES do not go through this procedure, our buyers get them directly from the manufactures, keeping the prices down.

Aftermarket: aftermarket parts are just that, aftermarket. They are not made by the car manufacturers. They can be made by one of the original equipment manufacturer companies or by a completely different manufacturer. The main difference is they are not made completely to the car manufacture specifications. This is not always bad. One example is Bilstien. They are an OEM/OES supplier, but they offer aftermarket parts also. There HD struts/shocks are original equipment, but their Sport struts/shocks and suspension kits are not made to OE specifications, better but not OE, so it’s now an aftermarket part. Another example is the Stewart EMP BMW water pumps. Stewart EMP is NOT an OEM/OES manufacturer but the pump they make is better and stronger than OE. It is an aftermarket part but a better part altogether.

But still another example of an aftermarket BAD part is a counterfeit part. Counterfeit part manufacturers use backward engineering to get the specifications of the part without paying the car manufacturer. And almost all the time these parts are made with very low quality components. Sometimes these parts are very hard to identify because a lot of emphasis is put on the look and feel of the part and not what it is made from. One way to identify an counterfeit part is its unbelievable low price, the old adage you get what you pay for fits here. The best way to avoid these cheap low quality parts is to purchase your parts from a reliable source, one that offers a warranty and return policy.

Almost all Performance parts are aftermarket parts, again be careful with these parts also. Buy from a reputable supplier or/or manufacturer.

SUV or Minivan: What Is the Right Vehicle for Your Family?

[ad_1]

For many young families four door sedans are enough to get their families around. But as your family, and children begin to grow, your small sedan may not cut it anymore. As your family grows, you will not only need more seats to accommodate new family members, but you will also need room for luggage for family trips, groceries, etc. Often when it comes time for families to buy a new car, the debate always comes down to buying a minivan or an SUV. Each vehicle type has its own advantages and each family is different, but ultimately a choice needs to be made. That is why we have compiled three important factors that go into each vehicle purchase and applied them to SUVs and minivans. Read on to find out which vehicle type is right for you and your family:

Safety

Safety is always the most important factor that cannot be ignored when it comes time to purchase a family vehicle. Important safety features like airbags, responsive seatbelts and antilock brakes now come standard in most new vehicles, but it is still important to research the vehicles that you would like to purchase in case certain safety features are not available or need to be purchased as an extra addition to the vehicle.

When it comes down to SUVs vs. minivans in regards to safety, minivans are typically found to be safer. SUVs have a reputation for rolling over and because they are made primarily for taking the vehicle off-road, these vehicles are often less safe than minivans. SUVs can still be very safe cars, but if you’re in the market for an SUV, it is important to research the safety features of the vehicle you would like to purchase. It is more important to research SUVs than minivans because minivans are presumed to be safer. But, it is still important to conduct safety feature research regardless of what kind of vehicle you would like to purchase.

Size

The size of your vehicle can be immediately determined by the size of your family. Smaller families will be able to fit comfortably into a larger SUV, while larger families will likely need the extra seating and space that most minivans will provide. Other factors contribute to what vehicle size your family will require as well. If you have a smaller family that travels a lot then you may need a larger vehicle, or if you’re a larger family with more than one vehicle you may not require a second vehicle that is very large.

Minivans are typically larger than SUVs and therefor have more room. Some larger SUVs are comparable in size to minivans, but on the whole minivans are larger than SUVs. When deciding between an SUV and a minivan keep in mind how much seating and cargo space your family will require. These factors will mostly influence your decision to purchase a minivan or an SUV.

Fuel Economy

The fuel economy of your family car is especially important for families looking to save money on gas. Fuel economy can be especially important if your family travels a lot or if the family car doubles as a car that gets parents to and from work, appointments, etc. For families that drive more than one car, fuel economy may not be as big of a deciding factor when it comes time to purchase a vehicle as that particular car may not be driven as much. For single car families, fuel economy can be a very important factor as the car will be driven much more often.

Minivans usually have better fuel economy than SUVs. SUVs are known to use a lot of gas and need to have their tanks filled more regularly. If you are concerned about using too much gas or if you simply would like to save money on gas, then purchasing a minivan may be best for you and your family.

Buying a family car can be a difficult decision. Narrowing the decision down to purchasing a minivan or an SUV can be even more difficult. Because every family is different, several factors must be taken into consideration before making a purchasing decision. No matter what your decision is, we are sure your family will enjoy your new car.

Top 5 Window Tinting Myths

[ad_1]

When it comes to window tinting, especially car tinting, many people share common misconceptions. We are going to discuss the myths surrounding the window tinting industry and reveal the truth.

Myth 1: Car Tints are only for boy racers!

Well, we won’t deny the popularity of tints in the racing community. It can make sports cars and small hatchbacks look even more sporty. However, it is nonsense to think that they are designed only with this sector of the market in mind. In fact, at our workshop, sports cars and customized cars account for the smallest percentage of our customer base. People from all different walks of life with a wide variety of car types bring their cars to us. This includes 4×4 drivers, tradesmen with vans and estate cars, mums with family cars and MPVs and business men with saloons/sedans.

Myth 2: Window Tinting is illegal and will likely void my car insurance!

No, it is not illegal in most countries. In certain countries laws are in place that limit how dark a tint can be on certain windows. For example, in the UK, it is illegal to do front door glasses, but the rest of the car can be done as dark as you like. You should check you own local laws to find out how dark you can go. As for insurance, it is very unlikely that an insurance company or underwriter will refuse to insure you. This is because tints are primarily a security product, providing privacy and adding strength to the glass. That being said, your insurance will be void if you illegally go darker than the prescribed limits in your area.

Myth 3: Window Tinting will lower the resale value of my car!

This will be true in some cases, but not in all cases. For instance, I for one, like tinted windows. So, if I were looking to buy a car, finding one with tinted windows would have a higher value to me than for someone who hates tints. Bear in mind again that it is not just for aesthetics. They provide security, cut out UV rays and provide heat reduction in the hotter months. These factors can add value to a car. However, if you don’t believe these points could add value to your car, window tints can be removed at a later stage. The process is completely reversible if required or desired.

Myth 4: Window Tint will affect my heater element on heated rear screens or radio/security antennae fitted onto the glass.

Well, a sub-standard product or even a poorly installed product can cause problems. However, tint itself is designed not to interfere with modern fixtures in our glass. To be safe, make sure you use a reputable dealer using quality products. Only use a dealer that offers a guarantee or warranty.

Myth 5: Window Tint will stop me from seeing out of the car when I’m driving!

If your not a fairly competent driver to begin with, then it is possible that you will struggle to get used to having darker windows. However, the films work one way, similar to a one way mirror at a police line-up. You can see out but can’t see in. Please also remember that there are tinting films that will not be so dark which still allow one to see into a car from outside. Ask your dealer to show you samples and make sure that he will allow you to sit in a demonstration car, or even his own car, to give you an idea of what it will be like. Any reputable dealer will not push the product onto you if it is not really right for you. Every reputable dealer that I have met has shown samples and allowed customers to sit in a car or two. They won’t sell tints just for the sake of making a sale. Installers live on reputation and customer service so don’t be afraid to visit your local shop just for a chat about things. If you find a pushy salesman then walk away, there is no room for power sellers in the window tinting market and this type of dealer is not to be trusted. You have been warned.
