What Does an Automotive Service Manager Do?

[ad_1]

The automotive service manager is the person that is responsible for the supervision of the service department for an auto dealer. They act as go-between for the customer, mechanic, and an auto dealer. The major part of their duties includes customer satisfaction and customer relations. They are ultimately the individual who is responsible for productivity and profitability of the service department. Part of this responsibility includes sales, and keeping all customer service records.

This individual is also in charge of supervising all elements of safety as they pertain to maintenance of customers’ autos. As part of their duty they supervise the complete mechanical process, assuring only the highest level quality service is provided. They are responsible for the inspection of every vehicle that has been repaired or worked on within the service department and are also responsible for selecting an individual who oversees this in their absence.

The automotive service manager must be an individual who is able to focus on several different things at the same time. This includes the supervision of all personnel, the service department, and hiring and supervising. They also must keep track of all service data files that documents any pertinent information retained to employees, including reviews and raises.

The service manager ensures the dealer at the service department obtains the goals of the dealership as they pertain to the budget. In many cases, they may be expected to create and monitor a marketing plan that involves the creation of current and recurring business. For many automotive dealers service, customers typically consist of individuals who have purchased cars in the dealer. You may also be required to generate this information from outside the current clientele.

New vehicles repairs are typically covered by warranties. It is the responsibility of the service department manager to understand the intricacies of all warranties and to inform the staff of this information. Service managers must also beware of any information obtained relative to recalls.

Typical service managers have a background in automotive repair and will most likely have worked for the dealer he is now employed by. Some dealerships hire from outside of their service staff if it does not create a conflict between employees. No matter where they have gotten their training, it is necessary that this individual has years of experience as a mechanic. Usually it is desired that this experience is on the brand of cars the dealer carries.

This position is typically a well-paid position and, in many cases, includes a respectable benefits package. In many instances this individual will receive a demo car and full medical and dental benefits. Being promoted for this position can be lucrative and rewarding for an experienced mechanic.

Rethinking The Oil Change Business Venture

[ad_1]

Annual quick lube survey, is it still viable?

I wish to comment on the Fast Lube Business and the annual survey done by Auto Laundry News, one of the few Industry Magazines for the car wash industry. In this 2001 survey, we see an increase on the number of locations out there. Yet the leader of the Industry is by far Jiffy Lube. We see variations on theme, but we can safely say that Jiffy Lube has adapted best to the American public and their desires when it comes to oil changes.

This survey showed the average customer would drive 5.7 miles to get an oil change. If 50% of the customers would drive 5.7 miles and 80% of the customers usually come from a three-mile radius to get a car wash, I see additional synergy. These car washes with oil lube centers are getting a further reach than the industry average. This is great news for those carwashes adding oil lube bays, but also it takes up space and if not marketed correctly it will not work. The survey was quick to show that oil change facilities do best in middle class areas, not high-end areas. They do poorly in low-income areas. This all makes sense. Free standing car washes were the most likely to have oil lube facilities on there properties. Interesting too is that minimum wage was not prevailing, normally the companies pay $8.00-10.00 per hour. Makes realistic sense and I believe good help starts in this country at $10.00 per hour in most metros and $8.00 hour in rural.

Only 23% of the fast lubes had a website. Only half had internet access in the locations. Average employees were 5 full time and 3 part timers. Luckily for the image of this industry 74% had specific uniforms. The average shop had 3 bays, not enough to do the volume if adequate blitz marketing and community based marketing were taking place. Average revenue was $32.00 per car. That is an awful lot of upselling since the average advertised price that I have noticed is around $19.99. Less than 30% were open on Sundays? Bad mistake since there is no time to change oil and wait in line for most Americans. Average monthly gross was $2,400.00 per month per bay?

This is shit, this is not even a viable business, these people are wasting their time. Think about it, you have cost of oil and filter too and labor? Forget that news. I question the viability of the entire oil change industry. The largest Jiffy Lube franchisee in the country with 180 units was de-listed from NASDAQ and so was another prominent auto care and lube company recently. I like the Kwik-Lube Company and feel they are doing it right, but also question the ROI of such an endeavor seeing these results and the cost to build the building and time to build it. One good thing that the oil lube bays have going for them is the up-sell, but as the consumer dollar gets tighter and the credit card debt gets higher and the fall out rates increase where will this extra impulse revenue and up-sell cash be coming form?

The Industry is still expanding and new entrants to the market place are hurting existing units and I question the saturation point, not on need, but on desire. No one wants to spend money on oil changes, they need to. People buy what they want, satellite TV and beer. Not what they need, so I see a frequency problem issue brewing and people waiting 5-6-7 thousand miles between changes. So I believe that if an oil lube bay is not already attached to another reason to frequent the facility it will soon be in desire straits. The survey also showed that 93% OF THE OIL LUBE BAYS USED ADVERTISING TO GET THEIR CUSTOEMRS? WHY? We do not advertise, word of mouth and happy customers advertise for us. There you go again more cost.

Also 60% of the surveyed said that competition was discounting. HMMM? You have labor costs that are high, frequency is down, new car technology on the horizon, cost of oil going to the big guys and throw in a price war? I see problem as the non-savvy operators leave facilities for sale and exit the market place. By eliminating the facility and going mobile with the existing customer base of let’s say a mobile truck repair business which can co-band and fleet services available you could beat these other companies since they running redline over saturations of mailer coupons and phone book ads and no web sites. Many companies are not watching the changing demographics at their locations and lease or property costs and unable to sell or borrow more due to their lousy profit margins. And what can you convert and Oil change bay into? Cover up the hole for a tire shop? What happens when Hydrogen cell comes and no one changes oil. Can you convert to filter type operation? Not really since often the tires and wheels are offset and will land the modular car into the lube bay hole. We have the solution and we can beat them in almost every aspect. Some consultants have said; “Bunch of dummies copying each other.”

Listen to this part of the survey, advertising dollars were spent on, here is where the respondents said they advertised; TV 15%, Direct Mail 51%, Radio 38%, Newspaper 35%, Bill Boards 18%, Yellow Pages 53%, other only 13%. Scary, all that costs money and everybody is running redline copying each other. This is what happens when people cannot think any longer and cannot adapt and do business at the speed of thought,

81% of respondents said they would honor competitor’s coupons? Whatever, why print them then. Let everyone else spend the money and take theirs? 80% said they have tried to use discounting to lure customers from other lube places to theirs. Boy this sounds like the carpet cleaning industry to me.

Breakdown in costs per job. 10% rent or property, 3% maintenance of facility, 26% labor, 30% materials, 4% utilities and many reported expecting that to double and some have already in the west experienced a tripling. Insurance 4% and that to expected to keep rising and some said 8%, Customer claims for damage 1%, this is in-excusable, Advertising 10%. Want to add those up for me. Why are they doing it?

Average new facility costs were; Land $206,000, Improvements $505,000, New equipment $36,000. WOW all that for little or no return? Average number of competitors within 10-mile radius? 36% said 3, 19% said two, 19% said 5, 7% said 5 or more. How can anyone invest this kind of money per location when we can build a couple of units for a total of $65,000 and nearly equal the number of potential vehicles to service? Also with AAA building oil change facilities and Wal-Mart getting into things, the competition will be bloody and that is a lot of money to invest in a business with an uncertain future. Not a good bet, if you were a betting man.

We are very much liking this Industry because we know things the Industry does not and we can slam them because they have missed the boat. We have seen a few companies which are looking into ways to change the oil on the water for yachts. What is even better is that they all missed the boat at the same time and are fighting on shore for a few little boats to get to the ship that is leaving the harbor. Who will survive this oil change war. The one who bests services the customer, they way the customer wishes to be serviced.

Child Safety is Not Ignored in a 2006 Honda Accord

[ad_1]

When purchasing a new car, do you consider safety above all the other decorative features? If you have children, your answer should definitely be yes. Most parents use their cars every single day, often with their children riding along. For this reason it is so important to always be aware of your child’s safety while riding in the car. Automobile crashes are the leading cause of unintentional death among children under the age of 14, which is why it is surprising to hear that up to 14% of children are still riding unrestrained in cars.

Your children are the most important investments you have. What measures are you taking to guarantee your children safety while riding in a car? One step you can take is to be sure the car you drive offers only the highest level of protection. The 2006 Honda Accord is a reliable vehicle that not only meets all government regulations, but exceeds expectations on all safety features. Every feature emphasizes protection for children, including the LATCH and Child-Seat Anchors and the Front Side Airbags with Passenger-Side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS).

LATCH and Child-Seat Tether Anchors

By law, children must be restrained at all times while riding in a car. Child car seats are extremely effective at reducing the risk of death. In fact, they reduce the risk of death by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers. LATCH, standing for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, is a new car seat attachment system that was developed to make child car seats easier to use and safer. With LATCH, you no longer have to use seat belts to secure child car seats in your vehicle because of the lower anchors and attachments that are built into the car. This will make car seat installation easier and more secure. Most vehicles built in or after 2002 will have LATCH.

The 2006 Honda Accord is built with the outer rear seats featuring the LATCH system for child seats. It consists of 2 lower anchors and a single top tethor to make sure the car seat is properly mounted. It is estimated that about 85% of car seats are installed incorrectly. The LATCH system makes installation easy and completely secure. For car seats that are not compatible with LATCH, they can be safely mounted in the rear seat of any 2006 Honda Accord using the lockable seat belt retractor.

Front Side Airbags with Passenger-Side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS)

The 2006 Honda Accord truly goes above and beyond any ordinary regulations with the safety features of front side airbags and OPDS. In the event of an impact to the side of the car, sensors will cause side airbag to immediately inflate. The airbag provide a cushion between the occupant’s shoulder and door, ultimately protecting the driver’s or front passenger’s upper body from any significant impact. The OPDS uses a total of seven sensors in the front passenger’s seatback to detect the height and seating position of the passenger. If a child or small-statured adult is leaning forward into the path of the side airbag, the sensors will deactivate it. The driver will immediately be notified by a warning light.

Similarly, the warning light will turn off as soon as the passenger sits back in the upright position. This feature is convenient for parents with older children riding in the passenger seat. No longer are airbags a worry because of the advanced sensors that monitor your children for you. This feature is also built into the and Honda Odyssey.

The 2006 Honda Accord continues its tradition of being among the best cars on the market. Make safety your first priority with the 2006 Honda Accord. It will give you all the safety measures and precautions to keep your family safe.

Auto Shop Safety

[ad_1]

In today’s auto shop there are many potential hazards to the fragile human body. In order to have a safe and productive work environment, there are simple steps that need to be taken in order to insure the physical safety of everyone in your automotive service shop. There are many tools and pieces of equipment in use that can potentially seriously injure someone. The first step is to take census of your auto or mechanical shop and locate machinery and tools that can be potentially hazardous. Any machine or tool that can cause a serious injury must be safeguarded. For example, a band saw is common tool in a mechanical shop and has the ability to cut off fingers and limbs. This piece of equipment needs to be safeguarded and all applicable safety features should be correctly installed. It is all too common to the plastic safety guards removed on a table saw because they are in the way of the operator. Safety cannot be sacrificed for convenience.

But remember machinery is not the only hazard, you need to be aware of in the shop. The power cords and air hoses that power equipment also presents a tripping hazard. Many auto shops have several air hoses and power cords stretched all over the place and most of them are not even being used at the moment. To combat this problem and help keep your shop floor clutter free we recommend using an air hose reel. Air hose reels are mounted on the shop walls and are usually self retracting. When a mechanic finishes working with his air tools, the air hose can be retracted and stored with a quick tug on the hose. There are similar devices for extension cords as well. Lets face it, a mechanic is much more inclined to keep his air hoses and power cords retracted if its easy and an air hose reel makes it easy. Also, spilled grease oil and oil can collect on a shop floor and produce a slipping hazard. It is inevitable that motor oil and grease will end up on the concrete floor. Most auto shops have containment spill kits that can contain the oil spill and aid in cleaning it up the minute it happens.

The next level of safety is the person. Once the auto shop is a safe and secure environment, you will need to consider the mechanics and other workers in the area. Eye protection should be worn at all times. There is almost always some type of work going on that is a potential hazard your fragile eyes. For example, grinders and needle scalers are capable of throwing debris a long way from the point of contact. People working in the same area are in just as much danger is the operator using the tool. Also, chemicals and gasoline can be splashed onto unprotected eyes causing anything from mild discomfort to blindness.

Hand and feet protection is usually fairly obvious. Most mechanics wear gloves to prevent burns and cutting while working on automobile. But gloves are also needed for a variety of other tasks as well. Do not handle chemicals and solvents with out wearing gloves and remember to remove watches and other jewelry as well. Always be aware of where you fingers are especially when lifting heavy objects. It may seem obvious but it is all too common to crush your fingers by letting a heavy object down on them. Mechanics gloves are a great choice when you need to work with small parts and tools. Mechanics gloves are light and tight fitting on your hand. This allows you to feel the parts and tools and still maintain protection. For your feet, there are advanced mechanic shoes that help you gain traction on oily floors and boots with steel toes to protect you from heavy objects.

Safety in the auto shop requires some basic common sense and attention to detail. A safe work environment is a combination of both the work area and the workers themselves. It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure the proper safety gear is worn and the rules are followed.

Ending Your Car Engine Sludge Problem: Remedies That Work!

[ad_1]

Engine sludge formation. Here is how it gets in your motor. And a new, inexpensive way to remove sludge without the need to take your motor apart.

When your car is about 4 years old and older. When your car’s odometer miles run pass 75,000 miles, sticky residues; leftovers from pass oil changes, begin to build faster and gum-up your motors piston rings. Your motors dirty piston rings are the primary cause of sludge formation. It happens in this way.

Your motor’s pistons have 3, 1/8 inch thick flexible, bracelet-like rings that have a springy nature to them. This keeps them ever expanding outward to provide blockage to keep your motor oil from escaping into the combustion cycle. And keep your fuels combustion gases totally above the piston. Its all needed to push your piston down, spinning gears, and wheels to propel you forward with zip and ease. Sludge begins when…

Engine sludge formation occurs when your piston rings allows those1500 degree combustion gases to slip pass them. This happens when dirty piston ring flexing outward action is slowed or reduced. A gap appears and with each burst of new combustion, little puffs of combustion escape pass your pistons and mix with your motor oil.

Well anyhow, there is always some escape of combustion, called blowby by us mechanics, even when your pistons rings work perfectly well. When rings and cylinder wear spaces allow more combustion to escape, you sludge your motor oil in a month of driving and you, by motor design vent it to the outside world. That is no good for air, water, old folks and children with breathing problems.

To prevent your cars heavily loaded combustion gases; containing a handful of suphurs, 5 gallons of raw gas, carbon black, and dozens of other negatives from being dumped into the air every 3000 miles of driving, a device is made to block its escape. Instead it is channel back into the combustion process. This is done by a thumb size check valve and hoses in a new motor sub-system called the positive crankcase ventilation system.

The positive crankcase ventilation system is overpowered by all that sticky, hot blowby and soon chokes down the blowby flow. When that happens sludge formation goes bonkers, like kids during their first year on the loose at college. Kids party. Sludge forms a 1/4 inch layer over every part. Kids know better. your motor does not!

The fix: Soon, your car starts losing its zip. It may consume motor oil. It may tap. Your exhaust smells worst than than your kids tennis after soccer practice. Friction wear is now running rampant. The usual fix is an overhaul at $3000 or more. Or a partial cleaning called an engine valve repair at up to $2000 in cost. Its a nasty, time consuming job to take apart and clean every part.

Engine Flushing. You may have read about all kinds of flushing methods from stepping on two frogs, to putting automatic transmission fluid and solvent in your motor to clean out the sludge. parts stores even sell engine flushes, which are solvents to do the job.

The bad thing about solvent motor flushes is they strip your pistons, bearings, valves, and gears of their vital oil lube film as they rinse away the sludge. And some of that sludge, during circulation, reform in all the wrong places. Usually blocking your motor’s oil pump pickup screen. About a week of driving after such a cleaning, your motor goes in convulsions. The mechanic say, in diagnosis,”It’s shot!”

New products to safely remove sludge using anti-wear cleaners are what is needed, if engine sludge is your motor’s problem. A leader in the field for internal engine cleaning and sludge removal with engine restorative ingredients is Mega Power. The Mega Power Sludge Removing Worn Motor Treatment is fast, and takes less than a hour. Mega Power is safe because it has friction reducers that lube even without the presence of oil. and it removes sludge over a 6000 miles time span. Instant restorative power results. Cost is under $100 – not $3000. And you can install the treatment yourself. Nothing to take apart. Driving does the cleaning. You can learn more and get ordering info at:

Do Auto Air Purifiers Really Work?

[ad_1]

Why The Air Inside Your Car May Be Killing You On Your Way To Work

Sitting in L.A. traffic one day with a headache a memory came back to me of a movie scene – The actor opens a garage door. Out comes a puff of exhaust. The motor is running. There’s someone inside the car. And the actor realizes it’s a suicide attempt and tries to save the person. So as I sat there in traffic (and in LA you can sit for hours every day) I wondered if I might be slowly killing myself with the fumes coming in my car. I decided to take a closer look at how sitting in traffic might be affecting my health.

I was already guessing it wasn’t going to be pretty.

The Many Problems With Inside-Car Pollution”

The average amount of time spent commuting to and from work has increased steadily since the 80s, with more people driving in excess of forty minutes to work each day. Even with the car windows closed many International studies show that car air pollution inside is even more severe than outside pollution.

While it receives little attention, in-car air pollution may pose one of the greatest modern threats to human health

The results of 23 separate scientific studies conducted between 1980-1999 reveal that in-car air pollution levels frequently reach concentrations that may threaten human health.

The air pollution in the interior of automobiles is almost exclusively of gasoline and diesel exhaust. This toxic soup of gases, aerosols, and microscopic particles includes:

– benzene (a known carcinogen)

– carbon monoxide (which interferes with the blood’s ability to transport oxygen)

– particulate matter (which studies have associated with increased death rates)

One other new form of pollution is the outgassing in many of the plastics inside the car which now have chemicals to protect the plastics and dash from the sun. They protect the car, but challenge your health.

NOTE: IF YOU HAVE ANY TYPE OF ALLERGIES OR ASTHMA AND DRIVE IN TRAFFIC THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT

Closing The Vents WILL NOT Prevent The Problem

Federal law requires that every car must have 20 percent intake, even with vents closed. So even with the vents closed (or your air system set to “recycle”) you may not only have toxins, you might actually have a higher percentage of toxins as the air inside is trapped.

OK, so it’s bad. Let’s turn our attention now to possible solutions.

How To Get Cleaner Car Interior Air

Since all interior air has to go through the ventilation system (with the windows closed of course) the ideal would be to have a built in or optional air purifier from the Original Manufacturer. But the demand is not there from the public. The excpetion is a few high end auto manufacturers (Lexus is one) that have interior auto air filtration systems built in.

What Types Of Supplemental Car Air Purifiers Are Available?

There are hundreds of auto air purifiers coming out of China to the U.S., ranging from $5 to $200. The technologies found include:

– Ionic (most popular, cheapest, but not the most effective)

– UV (helpful for bacteria, viruses, germs)

– Active Carbon (effective for odors, smoke, pollution)

– Zeolite (inexpensive yet effective natural volcanic stone which absorbs gases, chemical fumes, etc.)

Most supplemental auto air purifiers have 1 or 2 types of technology. And while the market is flooded with ion filters for cars (found on Ebay, etc.) they do a very minimal job. Zeolite is great for absorbing gases but rather than buy a purifier with zeolite I found I can just as easily buy a small bag of zeolite ($5), and threw it under the seat of the car. I occasionally put it in the heat of the sun to purge the gas it holds onto.

Do Car Air Purifiers Work?

Yes. They will help, as long as you have the following:

1) a strong fan

2) several air purifier technologies (not just ion)

3) Keep the windows closed.

You’ll also want it in the front seat or front compartment to counteract the effect of the cars ventilation system.

The small Ionic, plug in, car air purifiers found everywhere (even on Ebay) are cheap but won’t do much without a fan.

4 Steps You Can Take For Better Inside Car Air

#1 Try to avoid driving behind large trucks, diesel trucks and cars whenever possible

#2 When you get away from traffic open the windows to allow fresh air in, and to allow toxins to escape

#3 Buy yourself a small bag of zeolite

#4 If you opt for a small car air purifier look for one that has several purification technologies to capture a wider range of toxins.

Auto Locksmiths

[ad_1]

One of the things that are guaranteed more than anything is that at some point drivers will lose their car keys. Luckily they are usually found fairly quickly after some fairly frantic searching, but for some it means calling out a specialized Auto Locksmith to get them back into their vehicle.

Auto locksmiths usually work on a 24 hour callout basis and can for a price be called out to practically any location within the UK. Because they are mobile workers they usually have the tools required to get into any make of car and sort out the problems you are experiencing fairly quickly.

Losing your car keys can be a real problem especially from a security issue if your car can be identified via your keys. If your car is stolen because you lost keys which readily identified it, then you could have serious problems with your insurance company paying out a claim.

The efficiency and speed of an Auto Locksmith when called out means this problem is reduced considerably as they are usually able to effect a change to the locks immediately plus get you back on the road. This also means that you don’t have the worry of leaving your car unattended knowing there is the possibility that someone is waiting for the opportunity to steal it.

One type of crime which is on the rise in the UK is car keys being stolen from homes and the burglars coming back at their leisure to steal the car. Calling an Auto locksmith out to change the locks on the car before it can be stolen is a priority and well worth the cost. It can usually also be claimed back on your car insurance.

So what type of car lock problems can an Auto Locksmith deal with? In the majority of cases just about anything would be the answer. They can repair the lock, change it completely, activate a central locking system that has seized up and even replicate your keys as needed.

Auto Locksmiths are able to replicate just about any type of car key; it’s always a good idea to buy a spare from a reputable Auto locksmith dealer in case of any emergencies that might arise. For instance some keys become “chipped” and end up not working; having a spare key solves a lot of the problems otherwise incurred.

One of the snags with modern cars is problems with the immobilizer built into it. These types of cars require a key fob to enable it to start and an expert Auto locksmith will have the skills required to clone the fob key for that particular car. Though relatively expensive, cloned car keys are an excellent deal as they are still a great deal cheaper than those bought through the car manufacturer’s dealership. They are usually prohibitively expensive when bought from source.

Things to Know About Trailer Services

[ad_1]

Think about trailers and the first thing that comes to your mind would be the gigantic vehicles that carry new cars to showrooms. The trailer services are also popular in the auto transport industry. Basically a cargo trailer which is used for transporting goods and materials is an unpowered vehicle that is pulled by a powered vehicle. Since there are no motors or engines in a trailer, it is usually pulled by a truck, car or tractor. They are used for transporting goods over a long distance.

There are various types of cargo trailer services like recreational vehicles, travel trailers and mobile home designed with all required facilities. They can be open or closed and are available in a variety of features like air conditioning and heat, ramp door, lighting and floor covering. You can take the services from a trailer dealer based on your purpose or intended use of it.

There are many companies offering trailer services as and when you needed them. You can search them online and land upon a good company. Once you shortlist some cargo trailer sale companies, compare their prices, the type of trailers and the terms of their service.

If you are planning to invest in trailer sales, there are many variables that you need to consider. One of the main things that need your attention would be to decide between a new trailer and a used one. If you are choosing a new trailer you have the option to pick and choose from the customized options offered by the company. You will get the exact one that you are looking for. On the other hand if you are going for a second hand one, the cost would be less but there would no custom options. You can go for used ones if the trailer dealer offers customizable options for them and also you need to make sure that you are getting a fair deal.

The second thing you need to decide would be if you need enclosed trailers or open deck trailers. If the goods that you wish to transport can withstand open air elements, you can go for open trailers. However if goods are better served to be transported under cover, go for the closed ones. If you are in the lookout for car haulers sale, you can choose from an open runner deck car hauler or an 8.5 foot wide enclosed car hauler. Both car haulers and motorcycle trailers are available in open deck and enclosed. You can select the apt one depending upon your needs and preferences.

Since the cargo trailers are available in wide range of length and width, you need to select the ones that suit your needs. There are small utility trailers or landscape trailer which would be open deck or enclosed one. Depending upon the particular cargo you need to haul, the size of the trailer can be determined.
