Seven Strategies to Evaluate a Car Dealership

[ad_1]

Whether you’re shopping for your first car or you’re ready to trade in an older model, choosing the right car dealership has the potential to save you thousands of dollars. It’s also important to do your research to ensure that you’ll be happy with this substantial purchase for years to come. Here are seven things to look for in a dealership when you’re shopping for a new or used car.

1. Get Recommendations

While online reviews of dealerships can give you an idea about the quality of service they offer, these sites may offer an incomplete or misleading picture. Although web research is a good jumping-off point, you should also reach out to friends and family members who have recently purchased a vehicle. They’ll be able to tell you about the purchasing experience they had and possibly even refer you to a specific salesperson.

2. Know About Manufacturer Rebates

If a car manufacturer is offering a rebate on the vehicle you’re interested in, know the terms before you go by printing the offer from the manufacturer website. A good dealer should give you the exact terms offered by the manufacturer, regardless of the purchase price you negotiate. Some dealers keep these rebates as profit, which is a red flag that you should steer clear.

3. Ask for a Walkthrough

Your car dealership should spend time with you for more than just a five-minute test drive. The best sales associates will be willing to walk you through all the features and perks of the vehicle you’re considering, so you have a full understanding of your purchase before you sign the sales contract.

4. Do Your Research

If you’re trading in a car, estimate the trade-in value you can expect to get from a car dealership using an online blue book resource. With a fair price in mind, it will be easy to avoid dealers who offer much less for your trade. You should also have an idea of the MSRP, or manufacturer-suggested retail price, of the new or used car in which you’re interested. This serves as a starting point for negotiation.

5. Avoid High-Pressure Sales

You should steer clear of a car dealership that makes you feel like you have to make a decision right away. A good salesperson will know the value of allowing you to weigh your options. This advice doesn’t just apply to the car itself; just say no to add-on extras like VIN engraving and paint protection. These services cost substantially more when purchased directly from the dealer and don’t necessarily add value to your vehicle.

6. Have the Car Checked Out

Any scrupulous car dealer will allow you to have the car checked out by an independent mechanic before you buy. If the dealer you’re working with balks, insisting that their mechanics have already checked the car out, don’t purchase your vehicle there.

7. Come Prepared with Financing

Bringing your own financing can often get you a better rate than getting a car loan directly through the dealer. As with having your car independently examined, any dealer that doesn’t allow you to do so should be avoided.

Frane Selak – Born Survivor

[ad_1]

Frane Selak, a music teacher from Croatia was born in 1929 and has lived to tell the tale on his many incredible brushes with death. The four times married man known by his friends as ‘Mr Lucky’ amazingly then went on to win the Croatian lottery.

His first dice with death was on a cold winters day when he was travelling on a train to Dubrovnik in 1962. The train derailed and plunged into a river. Selak received minor injuries and hypothermia while 17 others aboard the train weren’t so fortunate and perished.

Twelve months later, Selak was involved in an accident which killed 19. This time he was in a plane flying to Rijeka from Zagreb. He was blown out of the plane after the cockpit door blew off. He landed on a haystack and again, only received minor injuries.

His next accident came three years later when another mode of transport he was using, a bus, crashed into a river killing 4 but Selak survived unharmed.

His car caught fire while he was driving in 1970 and exploded soon after. Selak managed to exit the vehicle before the explosion. In 1973 Selak had another car fire and lost the majority of his hair.

Selak went over 20 years before his next ‘mishap’. In 1995 he again received minor injuries when he was hit by a bus. A year later a tree saved his life when swerved to avoid a truck on a mountain road. While Selak landed in the tree, the car exploded 300ft below.

Frane Selak had rode his luck then came across some when in 2003 he won £600,000 on the Croatian lottery. He planned to spend his winnings on a new house, a speedboat and a car which hopefully won’t explode. One thing is for sure though, Selak hasn’t led a quiet life.

Rancho RS9000XL, RSX Reflex and RS5000 Shocks – A Comparison

[ad_1]

Being in the aftermarket automotive parts business with a focus on Rancho shocks and suspension, it’s not uncommon to hear customers ask, “What’s the difference between the Rancho RS9000XL, Rancho RSX Reflex, and Rancho RS5000 shocks?” All three are reputable products from a company that helped pioneer the off-road industry, yet each is built for different uses and driving experiences. The Rancho RS line of shocks are geared toward the Jeep, truck, and SUV markets especially if the vehicle will be used in off-road conditions.

At the entry level is the Rancho RS5000 shock absorber. The RS5000 shock is a premium (almost general-purpose) shock often installed as a better-than-factory replacement for vehicles with worn out shocks or upgraded suspensions. It’s also recommended for the budget-minded consumer. The RS5000 is designed to provide comfort and control across the driving spectrum from street to mild off-road. The result of this is a ride quality that’s often bumpier than what the factory shocks provided because firm shocks are ideal for off-road driving and this comes at the sacrifice of some street comfort.

An upgrade from the RS5000 is the RSX Reflex shock. The uniqueness of this shock is the incorporation of an automatic “impact-sensing” valve that opens and closes depending on how quickly the piston is forced in or out. This provides a broader range of comfort and control across the driving spectrum from street to aggressive off-road. The greatest aspect of the RSX is that each shock is engineered specifically for the vehicle for which it will be installed. This provides optimal performance in concert with the vehicle’s weight. The downside of the RSX is that it’s a “light(er)-truck” shock and therefore not available for heavy-duty (HD) and super-duty (SD) trucks and larger SUVs (at least not at this time). This isn’t to say that it can’t handle heavy off-road use, because it can. It just can’t handle the excess weight of certain full-size vehicles.

An upgrade from both the RS5000 and RSX Reflex is the RS9000XL. The RS9000XL shock features a manually-tuned valve system that allows the driver complete control of the softness or firmness of the piston movement. This provides the broadest range of comfort and control across the driving spectrum from street to extreme off-road. Ride quality can be set soft for highway driving, medium for city/urban driving, and firm for off-road driving and even towing. There are nine possible settings so a quality ride can be had by even the pickiest driver (or their passengers). In addition to manual tuning, an auxiliary remote control unit is available that allows the shocks to be adjusted at the touch of a button while the vehicle is parked or in motion. The RS9000XL was designed with today’s bigger trucks in mind so in addition to the typical 2-1/8″ and 2-3/8″ body diameters found on most shocks, the RS9000XL is also available with a 2-3/4″ body for select full-size applications.

When choosing your Rancho shocks, you’ll need to consider your budget and what kind of driving they’ll be used for. As expected, RS5000 cost the least, RSX cost approximately 40-50% more, and RS9000XL cost approximately 40-50% more than that. If you’re looking to save money or merely replace your old, worn out shocks, the RS5000’s will work adequately. If you’re still on a budget, but want a ride superior to what an RS5000 offers, then the RSX Reflex is recommended. If budget is not an issue, or if you want the best shock available without getting into the “extreme” off-road shocks, then the RS9000XL is recommended.

The Courier Service Trucking Industry: You Can Avoid Unsafe Shipping Practices

[ad_1]

Many trucking companies and industrial courier service providers do not enforce safe shipping practices, let alone train drivers to follow proper safety procedures. Lost or dropped shipments are some of the main problems in this trucking industry which are only compounded by damages incurred that can increase your costs as you wait for a replacement item to appear. If you are in the market for a new courier service company, the following unsafe practices are something you must be aware of to avoid trouble later on.

Countless accidents on roadways have made the evening news, accidents which often involve a driver's load being dropped onto the street with extensive damage to freight, vehicles, and people being the end result of such mishaps. A quick survey of the news over the past year reveals the following types of accidents among those taking place:

· Vehicles have fire fire on freeways simply from running over objects which were lying in the road

· Precious and / or expensive [as well as hard to replace] cargo is damaged

· Traffic tie-ups have occurred due to cargo being dropped on the roads while the driver mainly loads everything back onto their decks

· Most freight is simply too heavy to manually lift back onto the vehicle, so further time consuming arrangements must be made to have pickers or forklifts in place to remove cargo from the roads

· Accidents involving passenger vehicles located directly behind the offending truck accidents as cargo falls off and hits cars

· Increased risk of injury to motorists, even death have taken place; In one grave circumstance an accident caused a person to be decapitated on a local freeway when a large metal disk flew from the truck and sailed through the car's windshield after hitting a bump in the road

· Spills, including chemical spills and dangerous goods have taken place shutting down entire roadways as hazmat crews were called in to remedy the situation

Keeping problems such as these from happening in the first place does take some effort, but they are well worth it. These efforts should include: strapping the loads down with whatever is suitable for that particular cargo such as nylon woven straps, chains, and tie downs, and having boxes secured or placed safely in the cab of the vehicle. Basically, if you were to turn a properly secured vehicle upside down, nothing should fall off or out of it.

Please know that simply having gated sides on a courier service truck is usually not enough to secure your cargo as bumps in the road, the sudden need to slam on the brakes, or even navigating sharp corners can prove deadly to anyone who is near to the Falling cargo.

All straps used must be rated for the proper weight of the shipment without any nicks in them as this could cause them to break. In addition, the ratchets must always be in proper working condition or they will not do their job. No weak links or correlation can be allowed on any of the chains which are being used for that shipment. For that matter, nylon woven straps do a superior job in securing a load than chains do in most circumstances. Padding must be placed on sharp edges to prevent the straps from getting cut while vehicles and equipment should be diligently maintained and undergo regular safety checks.

Safe shipping procedures are just as critical to one's business as they are to one's health.

Large fines are imposed by the DOT (Department of Transportation) for unsafe shipping practices, but countless drivers flout the law anyway. Penalties of $ 5000 or more can be estimated while in some jurisdictions the truck and its contents can be impounded when egregious situations do occur. The threat of litigation and fines should be a deterrent, unfortunately for some drivers and companies it simply is not.

If you were to query offending courier drivers you would learn that many would say that they're too busy to adequately strap their shipments while others simply do not care to make an effort. Legally, it is the driver's responsibility to secure their loads. Therefore if a company is shipping something that is not safely packaged or skidded, the driver must refuse to carry the cargo. Regardless, some will accept the cargo anyway for fear of offending a valuable customer or to avoid confrontation with the shipping company. Certainmore, some shippers do not understand all the abuse that cargo can go through while traversing bumpy roads so they do not take the needed measures to secure things properly and safely.

Likewise, there is the issue of lease owner operators who have a significant vested interest in equipment and costs versus the hourly paid drivers who use company vehicles. With some members of this latter group they have nothing to lose with very little incentive to even care.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a good trucking company or courier, then you must select one who has safety policies and procedures in place that they mandate their drivers to follow, regardless of whether they're owner operators or company drivers. If a customer sees a driver pulling away from their lot without having adequately secured the shipment to the deck of the vehicle, they should call the courier company to lodge a formal complaint after ordering the driver to stop immediately to secure their load. Any courier service or trucking company that is not willing to follow industry accepted safety practices should be dismissed for the sake of your goods as well as for the public's safety.

The Facts – Problems and Disadvantages of Hybrid Cars

[ad_1]

Pros and Cons of Hybrid Cars

Get ready for some sticker shock.

One common complaint about hybrid cars is their initial price. According to Cars.com, the Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for new model year hybrids ranges from $21,100 (Toyota Prius) to $104,000 (Lexus LS 600h). Adding all the hybrid technology to a vehicle is expensive, and some of that extra cost is passed on to consumers. As an example, the new Toyota Camry is available in several trim levels ranging from about $20,000 for the LE version to more than $25,000 for the hybrid Camry. The Honda Civic starts at $15,000 (DX) while the hybrid version will set you back at least $22,600.

So, yes, if you are low on cash right now, the extra cost of going green could be the deal breaker. At the same time, it is important to consider the long-term savings associated with a hybrid when making a buying decision. While the gas-only Camry is getting around 21 miles per gallon in the city, the hybrid version gets about 33 MPG. That could mean that shelling out the extra $5,000 now could save you a bundle in fuel costs over the long-run. Resale value is also better for the hybrid model.

Burning through batteries

Another disadvantage of buying a hybrid are potential problems that could occur with their expensive batteries. Because hybrid technology relies heavily on the electric battery within the car, buyers are often concerned that these types of batteries will need to be replaced more often than would a standard, 12 volt battery.

Fortunately, the nickel metal hydride batteries in hybrid cars charge themselves when the car is not using the electric power supplied by them. By avoiding draining the batteries, studies have shown that these batteries normally last just as long as those of a standard vehicle. Hybrid vehicle manufacturers also include warranties to cover these batteries for 80,000-100,000 miles. You can learn more about the warranties on different hybrid models here.

Is my footprint truly green?

Hybrid vehicle technology is complex and therefore it requires many resources devoted to its production. This means that the factories producing hybrid cars are likely creating just as much, if not more pollution than factories that build non-hybrid vehicles.

On the other hand, the impact of those hybrids once they are on the road is much less than that of standard vehicles, thereby decreasing their overall, negative environmental impact. So, while buying and driving a hybrid does not free you from pollution and CO2 emissions, it does lessen the negative effects.

Am I safe in a hybrid car?

Two features that allow a hybrid to be so fuel-efficient, the electric technology and lighter weight of the vehicle, are cause for concern for some potential buyers. For example, the high voltage required by a hybrid car’s battery could prove dangerous in a collision if wires are exposed. Also, the light weight of some hybrids may concern potential buyers who fear these types of cars would not fare well in a collision. Check out the safety rating of most hybrid cars here or review hybrid SUV safety here.

Other disadvantages, issues, potential problems, and drawbacks to hybrid vehicles include their lack of availability, slower acceleration, brake noise & feel, the fact that some may be “too quiet”, and lack of choice – as most car models are not yet being built as hybrids.

EPS and EPP Foam in Car Seats – What Does That Mean?

[ad_1]

In searching for a new car seat, you often encounter terminology that you may not understand. What is this EPS and EPP foam the car seat manufacturer keeps boasting about? And what does it mean for me and my child? It is important to have as much knowledge and understanding of your child’s safety seat as possible. Your child’s life literally depends on it. Here, you will gain a better understanding of some of the most important safety features included in many of today’s car seats.

EPS Foam

EPS stands for Expanded Polystyrene and is most commonly known as Styrofoam. It is often used in items such as portable coolers and bicycle helmets. It is made up of thousands of mini beads that can be molded into various shapes and sizes. EPS foam has the ability to withstand a lot of abuse, but can also snap or tear. EPS is relatively inflexible and breaks easily when compared to EPP.

EPP Foam

EPP stands for Expanded Polypropylene. This is a high-grade engineering foam that has an elastic nature, allowing it to regain its shape when deformed. EPP foam has such extreme strength in fact, that it is often used in automotive bumpers. EPP usually recovers completely from impacts and is harder to tear than EPS.

So what does all of this information mean for you and your kids? Basically, since all car seats must meet certain government regulations for safety, both EPS and EPP foam provide adequate protection in a collision. Many high-end child safety seat companies will use EPP foam, which often costs up to four times that of EPS foam. EPP foam is flexible, which means it may not become permanently damaged as readily as that of EPS. This means that after an accident, the car seat with EPP foam may sustain its original shape better than the one with EPS. Some parents feel more comfortable using safety seats made up of EPP, as it is a higher-end product. However, since any car seat that has been in an accident should be deemed ineffective, it should be replaced, regardless of the type of energy-absorbing material inside of it. This is a personal decision to be considered. The important thing is that you have an understanding of what these different “ingredients” inside your child’s seat mean.

Driving has become such a mundane, every day activity that it is easy to forget how dangerous it can be. When it comes to the safety of your children, it is imperative that they are as protected as possible.

What To Remember When Choosing A Trailer

[ad_1]

When hauling freight or carrying goods and loads from one place to another, you wish to have everything reach the destination in time and good condition. The type of trailer you choose for the job can of course determine the kind of experience you have handling your loads. Whether you are looking to hire a trailer or buy one probably for your business transportation needs, you will need to make the right choice. Here are a few things to consider ensuring you end up with the right trailer for the job.

Trailer type

There are so many types of trailers and what may be suitable for certain freight may not be that effective to use with another. Flatbed trailers are some of the most commonly used trailers because of how versatile they are. The other options available include dry van trailers great for protecting freights from harmful elements, lowboy trailers which are designed for taller items and goods and removable gooseneck trailers for freights too long for standard trailers. Still on trailer type, you would need to decide whether to go with powered or non-powered trailers. Some trailers such as the self-propelled trailer has wheels that are computer controlled to achieve even weight distribution and accurate steering. The rule of thumb is to put into consideration the types of goods you need transported and then selecting the trailer that is just perfect for it. With so many choices getting the perfect one is not that hard.

Trailer suspension

Trailers with smoother suspensions offer better transportation experiences. Reliable suspension means less shock on your tow vehicle and cargo for that matter. It is therefore best to settle for a high performing suspension, especially for heavy loads and regular towing for valuable cargo. Leaf springs make the traditional suspension systems. Even though they are cheaper compared to other suspension, the springs give bouncier ride and can be noisier and faster in wearing. Rubber torsion suspensions on the other hand offer better and smoother rides compared to the leaf springs. It could be because they work independently so road impacts do not end up transferring from side to side as it is the case with the leaf springs.

Trailer construction

The construction does not only play a role in determining how durable the trailer is but also whether it is the best for your transportation needs. The frame is what supports the trailer and it should therefore be strong and sturdy enough. Most trailers feature I-beam, L-shaped, C-channel and tubular steel or aluminum. Tubular frames are stronger than C-channel which are stronger than L-beam. The more metal your trailer has the stronger it will be. Safety features should also matter when looking at the construction to keep cargo secure and safe. Check important features like D-loops, E-tracks and additional devices designed to keep your load secure. Also important to check are hinges, locks, entrance ramp and the wiring. You will only enjoy peace of mind when you are sure your cargo is safe and secure so check out everything that matters.
